SUMMARY
From leaving school, I was an apprentice for BT, where
my training covered all areas from underground cabling to Exchange
construction and maintenance. I moved up through the ranks to Technical
Officer and then into Management. As an engineer, I worked in PABX
Installation, PABX maintenance and general Field Maintenance, visiting
customers premises and fixing on-site faults. BT sponsored me through
evening classes and day release to reach my HNC in microelectronics and NVQ
level 4 in Management. As a manager, I was instrumental in introducing
Customer Service NVQ’s into my Call Centre team with a number successfully
gaining their NVQ’s before I left. I gained my D32/D33 assessors certificate
and was a member of a team within my division assessing the importance and
benefits of NVQ’s within the work place. After taking early release from BT
in 1999, I lived in the Algarve, working as a PC repair and maintenance
engineer and Tutor. My areas of expertise was Microsoft XP and Office, Virus
and Spyware eradication, Home and wireless networks and general hardware
repairs and upgrades.
I moved back to the UK just before Christmas
2005 as my
daughter is continuing her education back here in Preston.
Since returning I have immersed
myself in the world of Linux, using Ubuntu Linux almost exclusively. I am
exploring the use of Open Source Software in schools and in Assistive
Technology. I have recently written a comprehensive guide to Audio Streaming
using FOSS. I am also exploring other FOSS based technologies such as Moodle,
Joomla and Drupal.
